Riding on Support
By Bruce Felps
Jonathan Wentz and his horse, Richter Scale, share a special bond.
The two take that bond to London next year to test it against other competitors in the 2012 Paralympic Games para-Equestrian events.
Wentz, 19, has cerebral palsy. He learned to ride, jump, and compete aboard Richter Scale with the help of his physical therapist, Cindy Thomas of Forest Hills, and Equest Therapeutic Horsemanship.
A trip to London, though, particularly one with a horse and service dog — a retriever named Royal who wears a brace attached to his back to give Jonathan walking support when he is not in his wheelchair — takes money. Wentz’s mom, Tina Wentz, Thomas, and Gabriela Kovacic of Café Lago teamed up to help raise funds for the trip.
Café Lago serves up a burger bash from 7-9 p.m., June 1, at the eatery to help fun the trip.
The $25 dinner includes a burger, naturally, sides, beer, sangria, wine, and beverages on the patio.
Wentz will be there with Royal to thanks supporters. Richter Scale send his thanks by proxy.
