Tour the Coops
Community Contribution
The coolest “home” — for chickens, that is — tour in Dallas is back.
The second annual A Peep at the Coop: The Urban Coop Tour takes place May 1, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., in East Dallas.
Those interested in the growing passion for keeping backyard chickens can join this free self-guided tour through a dozen backyard coops. From simple to “eggs”travagant, every coop is a labor of love, and the tour is a great chance to see all kinds of coops in a variety of settings — and the hens that call them home.
The tour supports a good cause to boot: all proceeds will benefit the outdoor science program at Stonewall Jackson Elementary School.
This year’s tour will be based at Stonewall Garden and Outdoor Science Lab, the home of the 15-year-old model science program that is now entirely funded through community and business donations.
Last year, the Peep at the Coops Tour donated funds and labor to provide Stonewall Gardens with a custom-built coop to house a handful of chickens hatched in our own classrooms. Stonewall Gardens volunteers are proud to host the tour this year.
On tour day, visitors can come to the Stonewall Gardens to attend free seminars on the care and feeding of chicks and hens, find tour maps, buy T-shirts and raffle tickets — $5 or 3 for $12 — as well as check out all raffle items on display.
Businesses have donated raffle prizes this year, such as two mobile chicken coops from Mobile Chicken Coops and Ware Manufacturing, gift baskets and certificates from North Haven Gardens, Corner Market, Downing Hill Garden Studio, and Whole Foods; tickets to the Trinity River Audubon Center, Dallas Arboretum, and Texas Discovery Gardens; and food from area restaurants such as Garden Cafe, Another Broken Egg Cafe, and Rusty Taco. There is something for everyone in the mix.
Everything visitors need to know about the tour is available online — check for updates as the tour approaches.
Maps may be obtained at Stonewall Gardens on the day of the tour. Just before the tour, printed maps will also be available to pick up at Hillside Vet, North Haven Gardens, and The Corner Market.
Thanks to Carolyn Bush, Kate Cromwell, and Helene Honeybone for making this happen.

This was so fun last year. I’m so glad they are planning another one. I plan to split my time between the White Rock Lake Festival that day and the coop tour. Too bad our chickens lost their field trip privileges!
