Prepare to Howl
by Bruce Felps
The Hexter Elementary School PTA knows how to throw a fundraising event.
The organization’s members do it again with the fourth annual Hexter Howl Run and Carnival coming up starting at 8:30 a.m., Oct. 23, with the 5K run taking off from the school. The 1K fun run and walk begins at 9:30 a.m. the same day, naturally, and it, keeping with its relaxed atmosphere, includes a Halloween costume contest.
The carnival kicks in at 10 a.m. and goes until 3 p.m., also on the school grounds. That segment of the entertainment includes PTA members slaving over hot grills to serve up burgers, hot dogs, and sausages. Aw Shucks also donated some food, and the event features the obligatory bounce houses, inflatable slides, face painters, a rock climbing wall, and plenty of carnival game action, so step right up.
Early registration for runners closes Oct. 9, and saves a few bucks off the regular registration fee and scores runners a race T-shirt.
Runners also receive free training — Mondays at 7 p.m. at the school — with registration.
It all happens to raise money in support of Hexter Elementary’s literacy programs. This year, the PTA set its sights on raising enough money to buy 30 iPod Touch handhelds and docking stations, enough for all third- though fifth-grade classes. These babies do way more than simply play music.
So, help a Howler out, will ya?
