Bunny business
by Bruce Felps
So, last night at the Last Thursday happy hour, I joked with some of the folks about not being able to turn around without a Woodrow grad being right there.
Today is no exception. I read in the morning’s paper about the reunion of Playboy Bunnies happening tonight. Just a bit ago this afternoon, Kyle Rains sent an e-mail message saying that the reunion organizer — Karen Criswell Drennan, Woodrow ’76 — is, of course, a Wildcat and a classmate of Rains.
The story also brought back some personal memories. I went to the Playboy Club a few times back in the day and finally scored a date with a Bunny. Oh yeah.
Oh, no, the date just so happened to occur, of all nights, the same night John Lennon was murdered, and that pretty much put a damper on the evening.

We were at Mariano’s that night — the mariachi band played “Hey Jude” and dedicated it to John. We (after imbibing the famous invention of another Woodrow grad – M.M.) yelled, “hey what? That’s a Paul song”.

If you take a little trip to the area between the Lakewood Theatre and the Diener/Mills building, you can see the Lakewood StarWalk where there are many stars and bricks with names of lots of Woodrow Wilson folks and many others.
All of that area has been allowed to be for Disciples of Trinity (DOT) honorees. Even the “used to be a fountain” is dedicated to DOT and one of DOT’s supporters filled it with flowers & plants. The history of all of that area, the buildings, the fountain, stores and the residential areas surrounding it and much more of Lakewood/East Dallas is written about in “The Lakewood StarWalk As Seen Thru The Eyes of D. O. T.” copyright 1999 co-written by my self & Jim Davis. The book is still on sale at the DOT store 5810-12 Live Oak and all of the proceeds benefit DOT’s more than 2600 terminally ill children, women & men. Lots of photos, history & information are in the book and it is an easy read.
Shameless plug for sure but for a good cause.
