Backing Bath House staff
by Bruce Felps
Dallas, once again, faces a shortfall on its 2010-11 fiscal year operations budget. The city manager and staff have looked over the budget and recommended a few cuts to city services and personnel.
Although, I haven’t seen it yet, it’s not posted on Dallas City Hall’s Web site, the budget apparently contains a line item — Line 17, Budget Number OCA-001-C — calling for a reduction of staff at the Bath House Cultural Center, namely the manager’s position.
The Friends of the Bath House Cultural Center don’t want to see that happen.
The group launched a grassroots movement to save all three positions and keep the Bath House rolling along as it has been, and that roll includes serving about 30,000 people a year attending visual and performing art events.
Just so happens that Dallas conducts a series of town hall meetings to collect citizens’ input on proposed cuts and proposed saves associated with the 2010-11 fiscal budget. Those meetings provide the forum for people who appreciate the Bath House to voice their support for the venue and the staff.
Um, hint.

Bruce, thanks for sharing the words and hint. You’re right: Losing the Bath House manager position, along with already reduced hours, would put the Bath House on slippery slope to decline. Your readers can speak up at August budget hearings for WRL Council members: Jerry Allen, Sheffie Kadane, Angela Hunt. We Friends of the Bath House appreciate your coverage!
