Going from Lakewood to the North Pole
By Bruce Felps
Some fundraising efforts go to extremes, and this would be one of them … in a good way.
Wayne Maynard of Lakewood must really love to fly.
The 61-year-old plans to take to the air for eight straight days starting July 23 as he flies from Executive Airport, once known as Redbird Airport, to the North Pole, and, we certainly hope, back again.
That’s one guy, flying a 2003 Columbia 350 solo, and covering more than 7,000 miles.
Of course, there’s the sense of adventure and accomplishment attached to his effort, at least we hope for the latter. Maynard, though, also wants to raise money for and awareness of Grace Flight, an organization that provides free air transportation to people in need of medical treatments.
Maynard became familiar with the group after his brother-in-law needed its services. Must be the good kind of brother-in-law.
In addition to raising money, Maynard hopes to generate interest in volunteering for Grace Flight among fellow pilots.
This is one gift-giving flight involving the North Pole that’s no myth.
Clear skies, Mr. Maynard, and Godspeed.
A slightly, very slightly, different version of this article appeared yesterday on the NBCDFW Channel 5 Web site.

What an interesting service Grace Flight is providing.
And what an interesting view of the globe.
