Odd Couple Pass Through ELPO

Via a circuitous route yesterday, Jonnie England, director of Animal Advocacy and Communications for the Metroplex Animal Coalition, sent word of a pair of unlikely best friends who ended up at the East Lake Pet Orphanage for a while earlier this week.

About a week ago, a woman in downtown Garland spotted and rescued a Great Dane and a fainting goat who were traveling together. She took in the pair and sought alternate accommodations because she lives in a 30-by-30 foot condo.

After trying multiple shelters and such for a couple of days, the ELPO stepped up to help.

The dog and goat are inseparable. The rescuer, in an e-mail message, described the bond between the animals based on ELPO’s retrieval.

“The dog got up in the van easily, but it was too far of a jump for the goat. [The goat] cried and cried because he was not with the dog until they lifted him up in the van. I was told by the hospital that they did the same thing when they were getting them out of the van and when they were separated for just a  few minutes getting them into the fence at their temporary home.”

For some reason, representatives at ELPO and East Lake Veterinary Hospital seemed reluctant to discuss the odd couple, although they must have their reasons.

The goat, a male, appears to be on the young side and in fairly good health. The female Dane is older, with some health problems treated at East Lake.

They’ve since moved on to a foster home. Noted animal advocate Larry Powell also picked up on this story, and he has a few more details such at the dog and the goat, at the foster home, going single-file through a doggy-door to sit for their dinners.
