Liberty Rings Out
Staff Report
Worn, faded, tattered American flags need a proper sendoff after they’ve become unfit for display. The worn, cracked Liberty Bell went on permanent display and an exact replica now travels as a stand-in.
The two come together this weekend during a worn flag retirement ceremony at Flagpole Hill.
That proper flag sendoff involves a respectable burning, according to the United States Code, and Oldwornflag.com and Dallas Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution set up at Flagpole Hill at 2 p.m., June 13 — the day before Flag Day — to collect and dispose of flags no longer fitting symbols of the country.
In addition to the music, the addresses by dignitaries, the presentations by various service and civic organizations, and the rifle volley, the groups secured the presence of an American icon, or a sanctioned replica.
The Traveling Liberty Bell also will be on hand to provide sight and sounds of the original.
