Butterfly Garden Dedication Set
Staff Report
The Friends of the Bath House Cultural Center and the Dallas County Master Gardener Association plan a dedication service for the blooming Butterfly Garden and a new piece of art to adorn it.
The ceremony takes place at 4 p.m., May 8, at the Bath House. District 9 City Councilman Sheffie Kadane will preside over the ceremony.
The event recognizes the work of Janet Smith, who conceived of the garden in 2005 while studying to become a master gardener.
Two years later, the Dallas Park and Recreation Department approved a plan for Smith and the Dallas County Master Gardeners to design, plant, and maintain a sustainable garden in front of the Bath House Cultural Center.
Meanwhile, the City Office of Cultural Affairs commissioned a sculpture, Whirl, by Austin artist John Christensen to be installed in that spot.
Christensen and master gardener Carmel Womack, the garden designer, collaborated to create a butterfly haven surrounding artwork. White Rock Lake park staff installed a drip irrigation system and built an accessible ramp into the garden.
The rest, as they say, is history in the making.
