Dead letter office
Rumors crop up from time to time about the U.S. Postal Service shutting down the Belmont post office on Belmont Avenue just west of Greenville Avenue.
No surprise, really, that it or any other branch might be mentioned in the same breath as USPS budget cuts since the agency lost a ton of business to e-mail and online banking and such. It’s also floated the idea of ending Saturday service — yeah, so what? — and raising rates … again.
Word’s started to spread again about the demise of the Belmont office, and this time it came from an acquaintance who uses that location for personal and business mail, and who cited “a very reliable source,” as in a post office employee.
The location is hugely convenient for people who live between Skillman Street and Central Expressway or Henderson Avenue, and it’d be a pain in the bank account for small business owners who use a P.O. box there for mailingto have to change letterhead. It’d also be a pain elsewhere for people who receive personal mail there if they were forced by such a closing to send out change of address notices, even, ironically enough, to the postal system.
Then there’s the question of what type of operation might move in to the space.
So, anyone who wants to see the Belmont post office remain in service should write Reps. Pete Sessions or Eddie Bernice Johnson to state his or her case.
Pass it on.
